Amount of Homework
Dear Principal,
My daughter is in grade seven and seems to always have a large amount of homework. She spends over an hour every day. Is this the expected amount?
Mrs. Jackson
Dear Mrs. Jackson,
The amount of homework will vary with the grade level of a student but at all grades there are several key questions. The first of which is how much homework is assigned.
I would suggest asking her teacher how long she expects the homework to take on average. Is your daughter finishing work that was not completed during class time or is this extra work specifically assigned for home?
If a student is consistently taking longer than the teacher expects to finish assigned homework it is important to discover why. Often the student doesn't understand how to complete the work and spends much time trying to figure it out.
Rather than spend time staring at the books, children should ask for help either from their parents or from their teacher.
Finally parents should ensure that time a child spends on homework is really spent on homework. If your daughter is listening to the radio or television, or talking on the phone while trying to do her homework, this could explain why it takes so long.
